Fish AI System - Bassmaster® Fishing 2022!
In Bassmaster® Fishing 2022 we have been working with the pros to bring you a new next-gen Fish AI system. Today we are going to dive into how this works, and what tools you’ll have to hand to help scout out the waters and catch the biggest bass. Working with the experts Just like in real life, there are multiple variables that you’ll need to study and keep an eye out to get the best success when fishing. The development team has been working closely with freshwater biologists around the venues from the game. As well as gathering accurate scans of the water depth, we have been gathering data about the species, fish weight and fish population in the different venues that feature in the game. This means that you’ll have the most accurate experience when you venture out on your boat. Points of interest Venues in Bassmaster® Fishing 2022 have points of interest dotted around above and beneath the water. You’ll have structure such as pallets and trees that make hotspots for fish to gather around. You’ll want to explore the venues outside of tournaments and practice fishing at different times of day, different temperatures, and different locations. The fish are getting smart Our Fish AI system takes multiple elements and dynamically moves the fish around the venue. Fish have hundreds of paths that they will follow between different points of interest in the water. It’s important to move around as the time-of-day changes because a spot that was once thriving with bass at midday won’t be the same at different temperatures and different times in the day. This AI system mimics real life, so if you have any experience fishing in real life, that will help you here! But don’t panic if you don’t, we have lots of tools to help you find the fish. Below you’ll see a visual example of lines through the water that connect points of interest that the fish will move between. Finding those hawgs You’ll have a variety of tools at your disposal to help when finding and tracking big bass. First of all, onboard your boat you have a fish finder, so while you’re driving your boat around the venues, you’ll get readings on the size and population of fish around the boat. This is really helpful if you are fishing on a new venue for the first time, as you’ll be able to locate hotspots in the water and start hooking some bass. Fishing from a new perspective The underwater camera is a great way to find points of interest and to get a close-up look on the fish. While fishing you can toggle between underwater and over-shoulder camera angles on the fly, which is great if you like to mix it up while fishing and see the position of your rod. This is useful too if you’re using the trolling motor and need to check where you are going. The last thing you want to do is crash into something! But if you don’t want to use the camera at all, that’s ok too and you can switch it off completely in the menu settings. Come back later Once you have found a great spot to fish you can mark it up with the new map marker system. This allows you to mark a point on the map, select an icon and add some text to the tag. Once you add a marker it will also mark the time of day, temperature, and other useful information that you can refer to next time you look at your map. This is great if you are practicing out on the water and want to mark up a spot to come back to during a tournament. This is why it’s so important to learn the venues before you compete, to make it to the Bassmaster Classic you need to know where the big bass are! Using all the tools at your disposal, practicing, tracking on different venues, and marking it up on the GPS will help you climb the leaderboard and strike those big bass. Character Customisation - Bassmaster® Fishing 2022!
Bassmaster® Fishing 2022 lets you play as an Elite Series pro angler such as Scott Martin or Hank Cherry - or you can take them head on as your own fully customised pro angler! Today we are taking a look at how you’ll be able to customise your angler to make them your own so you can stand out when on the water. Becoming the face of Bassmaster® Fishing 2022 When you launch the game for the first time, you’ll need to setup your angler. You’ll have 10 Elite Series pros to choose from, or you can select a custom angler to start customising. The first thing you’ll get to do is select your angler’s look from a variety of faces. Which best represents you? Once you’ve settled on the look of your pro angler you can then alter their hairstyle, body shape, clothing, and other options such as beards (which we know you’ve been looking forward to), which will come in post launch updates. The team has been working with industry leading artists on new hair for Bassmaster® Fishing 2022. You’ll be able to pick from a range of highly detailed hair styles that bring your angler to life and in a post-launch update you’ll also be able to change your hair colour. All the gear, plenty of ideas Next, you’ll be setting up your “Practice” and “Tournament” outfits. These are two different outfits that you’ll automatically change between depending on the game mode you’re playing. If you’re out on the water, exploring and learning the venues then you’ll be in your “Practice” gear. Once it’s time to get serious and compete, you’ll be wearing your “Tournament” clothing. You’ll have a huge selection of clothing to choose from, so you can stand out from the crowd when you’re up on the Bassmaster Stage. Tournament Jerseys are a great way to make your angler look the part, and come in a variety of styles, including some unique custom ones specific to venues (in case you want to represent your hometown), Bassmaster series, and more. Below is a quick glimpse at a small selection of the Tournament Jerseys. To top off your setup you’ll be able to equip your angler with hats, sunglasses with different coloured lenses and snoods, to keep the chill off your angler when fishing in cold conditions. Mix and match Customising your character doesn’t stop here though! As you level up your angler profile, you’ll unlock more cosmetics and fishing equipment. Bassmaster® Online - Bassmaster® Fishing 2022
Today is kick-off for the Bassmaster® Classic at Lake Ray Roberts, Texas and, to celebrate, we wanted to reveal some early info on Bassmaster® Fishing 2022 and how you’ll be able to take on the Classic in game later this year! The Classic is the pinnacle of competitive Bass fishing and Bassmaster® Fishing 2022 will have multiple ways for you to fish your way to the top so you can lift that sought-after, Bassmaster® Classic trophy. Throughout your play-through of Bassmaster® Fishing 2022 you will be able to gain a following, sign on brands and sponsors and improve your setup. Whether you’re in single player, multiplayer or free fishing, you’ll be able to increase your anglers following by catching big fish! Your angler’s career isn’t locked to one mode, but across the whole game. Single Player Mode When you launch Bassmaster® Fishing 2022, you’ll be able to jump straight into your professional bass fishing career. You can either play out the career as one of the professional anglers in game, or you can make your own angler and take on the pros. You’ll start off with a clean slate, competing in the Bassmaster® College Series. Once you graduate from the College Series you’ll then move onto the Opens. To succeed in the Opens, you’ll need to make sure you earn enough points to move onto the Elite Series, and the next step of your Bass angling journey. Once you have competed in the Opens and scored enough points, you can then look ahead to the Elite Series. The Elite Series takes you one step closer to the Bassmaster® Classic and will challenge even the most experienced anglers. If you successfully earn enough points and place high in the Elite Series leader boards, you’ll then be invited to the Bassmaster® Classic. This is where you will take everything you have earned and learned to battle your way to the top of the leader board. Bassmaster® Fishing 2022 will have fully animated cut scenes where your angler will be weighing in, lifting the trophy, and taking their spot in the limelight. The iconic Dave Mercer will be with you all the way, during the weigh in, the trophy sequences, and the voice over throughout your bass fishing career. Throughout your road to the Classic, you’ll need to be at the top of your game, practice out of tournaments, perfect your setup of lures, rods, reels and more. Everything you do will determine whether you have the metal to conquer the water and win the Classic. Bassmaster® Online If you’re done dominating the single player modes, you can take on a whole host of new challenges in our all-new multiplayer. In multiplayer, you’ll take all the experience and equipment you have earned and pit it against other players around the world. Our multiplayer will have several different game modes, one of which being Bassmaster® Online. In Bassmaster® Online, you’ll start off competing in the Opens. After the Opens, you’ll move onto the Elite Series where the stakes are higher, for these, you’ll want to study the lake, practice offline, mark out your best spots to fish and then go head-to-head with other players. Once you defeat the other players in the Elite Series, you can then take on the online Bassmaster® Classic. This competition will be the best of the best, pitting the best players from all over the globe against each other for that coveted #1 spot. With so much at stake, have you got what it takes? Bassmaster® Online will run multiple times throughout the year on multiple venues, so you’ll have lots of chances to climb to the top. Not ready for Bassmaster® Online? Don’t worry, there will be plenty of other online modes for you to compete in while you practice and build out your equipment. Bass Bulletin - JUN.02.2021
**Behind each great game is a great team – and as we develop Bassmaster® Fishing 2022, we want to lift the lid on what we’re up to, and how we’re getting on. ** So, we recently had a chat with our Executive Producer, Ben Gunstone to give us an update on how Bassmaster® Fishing 2022 is coming along. Ben is new to the team at Dovetail Games and is a hobbyist angler. Ben has 25 years of experience in the games industry, starting off at Nintendo, then working on multiple sports games, and eventually moving his way through the industry on lots of great titles, including: Virtua Tennis, Magic: The Gathering, Carmageddon, and many more. So, how is development on Bassmaster® Fishing 2022 coming along? We are sleeves up, heads down. Everyone is super focused on making sure that we try and get all the features in that we have been trying to get in. We are at that stage now where there are multiple different focuses on the game. So, at the moment we are working on multiplayer and getting that working, we're also tackling the career mode, so the single-player structure is in and working. We're making sure that the fishing gameplay experience is both different, fun, and better than previous games. It’s really important that the core of the game is based around the high-octane sport of bass fishing. We're making a sports game and the sport just happens to be fishing, we want the competitive element to be in there from the get-go, as you’d find in any bass fishing real-life tournament. We saw that at the Sabine River event 40,000 people went to see that live. Last year’s Bassmaster® Elite series in New York drew in 7.2 million viewers. What are the challenges with game development? I've told anyone that I’ve made a game for that give me enough time and money and I can make anything, I mean literally anything. Effectively development is a classic triangle of time, cost, and quality, and if you pull on one it pulls on the others. If you increase quality of something it will take more time, or if you reduce the time it's going to reduce the cost, but it also reduces the quality at the same time. They are all intrinsically linked together, and that compromise is finding that balance between those three points continually. You balance and make decisions on that triangle all the way through development and those decisions have more pressure and more consequences the closer you get towards the end, because you’re running out of time! Every game is the sum of the compromises you've had to make to get it out the door. You can take that as a negative or a positive, I think every single game I've ever worked on everyone has wild and wonderful dreams at the start of it. The best part of making a game is the first month when you are just deep in design, and you just come up with all these great ideas and it is just such fun. Then you spend the next number of months or years, depending how big the game is, slowly whittling that down until you find the core experience that you really want, that grips players and provides that enjoyment we all hope to achieve from a game. A lot of work is going into the multiplayer side of the game, can you tell us about it? First up, it’s all completely new! We used to use a peer-to-peer system which is a multi-player system where when you set up a game, you become the host on your console or pc, and you invite players to join you. This meant that you were the host, data goes backwards and forwards. Then we have something called ‘host migration’, so if you dropped out, another connected player would turn into the host but when everyone quits, that session ends. Bassmaster® Fishing 2022 will have a dedicated server system, so there will always be a server. So, no one will be the host, everyone connects as a client to the dedicated server. That means we can control what hardware it is running on for starters, we can tune that hardware to meet the requirements that we need and balance that against the cost. The advantages are we'll be having a lot more players. We've tested so far up to 59 players, we intend to see where that limit lies, it might be higher than that, it might be lower than that. We just need to balance that against all sorts of different options, so there’s the cost of how much it takes the hardware to allow 50 to 60 players onto a server at one time, versus the playability and corresponding performance as well – we also need to ask questions like: ‘will 60 players on one of our lakes feel crowded?’ We have not got to testing that, but it’s on our to do list! How is the single player part of the game progressing? We are working on that right now because it’s really important alongside the multiplayer that the single-player career mode feels solid. It needs to feel like you can progress through the Bassmaster® tournament series up to and including the weigh-in celebration sequence that you see at the end of an Elite series and the Classic in the stadium. We are recreating both of those and I’ve got a team working on it right now. I can't show you any screenshots because the animation’s a bit wonky at the moment, we have got one guy without a head, and great big, long arms wandering around the scene, but yeah, it will look lovely by the time it’s finished. How has it been working from home for the team? It has both positive and negative effects on the team, and potentially the game as well. The positives are that it gives people the opportunity to be able to get their head down in a comfortable environment and remove themselves from office distractions. Not having a commute means you can use that time usefully; I don't necessarily mean do more work. I go to the gym in the morning twice a week which I’d never have had the time to do beforehand and that makes me feel better, it makes me feel more energized and it’s a far better way to start the day off than sat in a car in traffic. The flip side of that is with creative meetings that are online, they become a little bit more stilted. As soon as you have more than three people in an online meeting you must be very careful about who's talking, everyone's quite used to it now too so if someone else is talking, you stay quiet and let them do the talking. Let’s say you’re designing a new feature. You want that spontaneity, and you want that creativity that comes from bouncing ideas off of each other, which doesn’t necessarily happen in online meetings. You might find that some people feel like they don't have an opportunity to talk because someone else is talking, they don't feel comfortable in interjecting because of you online meeting rules. It makes me wonder what could have happened to the design of a specific feature if we were actually sat in a room together, versus sat in our own rooms at home during the meeting online. Overall, I think it’s a positive thing that allows Dovetail to have access to a more diverse pool of people to employ. I’m saying that personally because I would never have applied for this job if it didn't have the opportunity to work from home. I think I found a great job working for a great company who supported me and I’m supporting them. Thank you, Ben, for this first insight into what’s going on behind the scenes at Bassmaster® Fishing 2022. We’ll be inviting him back soon to provide you with an update on our progress as we get closer to release! Toledo Bend - Bassmaster® Fishing 2022
Here is another one of the great venues you'll be fishing on in Bassmaster® Fishing 2022 - Toledo Bend! Although work is still being done on the water, we wanted to share a sneak peek at the ongoing pre-alpha work on Toledo Bend. Toledo Bend is a reservoir on the Sabine River straddling Texas and Louisiana, Toledo Bend is the largest man-made body of water in Southern USA. Bassmaster® Fishing 2022’s section of Toledo Bend will be mostly in the Louisiana portion. In Bassmaster® Fishing 2022, the art team are using high resolution textures, meaning that rock faces and other textures around the venue will look better than ever so you can fully immerse yourself when you’re out on the water. The spawn point of the venue will be next to the famous Cypress Bend Park, from which you'll be able to see the stunning scenery that emulate real-life points of interest across the park. As you explore the rest of Toledo Bend, you'll uncover boat houses around the bank sides and foliage that is accurate to the area. Shorelines will be covered in tall Pines, Oak trees and more, and under the water, the foliage is just as diverse as the shoreline. Toledo Bend will also feature brush piles, shallow shorelines, cascading trees, debris build up and much more. When you jump into Bassmaster® Fishing 2022 and launch Toledo Bend, you’ll have lots of fish to target, including: * Black Crappie * Blue Catfish * Bluegill * Bullhead Catfish * Channel Catfish * Flathead Catfish * Largemouth Bass * Longnose Gar * Pumpkin Seed * Spotted Bass * Striped Bass * White Bass * White Crappie * Freshwater Drum We’re excited for all of you to start exploring Toledo Bend and to catch all the great fish this venue has to offer! Scott Martin in-game - Bassmaster® Fishing 2022
Over the course of the coming weeks, we'll be sharing our progress on more of our pro anglers, but we thought it only appropriate to start with Scott. Bringing Scott Martin to life in our game is an exciting challenge for the team at Dovetail Games, as this will be the first time you can play as or compete against in game pros on the water. Whilst these images are absolutely work-in-progress in our pre-alpha builds, we wanted to share with you the process of building a character within Bassmaster® Fishing 2022. We hope you enjoy! The team must first take reference images of Scott Martin and identify key features to make the 3D model look as good as possible - facial hair, eye position, ear height, body shape, jawline - these are just a handful of things we take into consideration when modelling an angler. 3D Modelling Scott Martin Once these fundamentals have been worked on, the team then needs to move onto other important tasks such as textures. Textures are key to making equipment, clothing, and faces look natural in game. The work that goes into designing anglers also gets built directly into the game. We’ll go into more detail at a later date about the customisation options you’ll have when making your own angler in game. Facial Features When we put our anglers out onto the water, that's when the fun really starts. We need to make sure the environmental lighting works with our 3D models. Lighting is a task that the team is working on at the moment - and you can see that, at this stage, things are not quite there yet! This ensures that shadows, highlights, and textures look as accurate as possible. Using Unreal Engine 4.26 gives the team a full host of new tools to work on throughout the development process, which we'll be talking about more in the coming weeks. Working with the environment We know how important your tournament jerseys are so, Bassmaster® Fishing 2022 has multiple professional jerseys to pick out that make your angler look like a pro. We make the jerseys and work with our partners to include their logos, so you can expect to see some of your favourite brands represented when you target your first Bassmaster® Classic win! Tournament Jersey We will have future updates on the progress the team is making with our anglers. Keep your eyes peeled to see who's next! Falcon Boats - Bassmaster® Fishing 2022
We have been working with Falcon Boats to bring you their F20 Predator to Bassmaster® Fishing 2022. Falcon Boats aim is to make the best high quality and high performing tournament-worthy boats, which is exactly why we wanted our players to get their hands on the F20 Predator in Bassmaster® Fishing 2022. Here is a pre-alpha look in Bassmaster® Fishing 2022, one of many boats you'll be able to use when the game comes out later this year. Our Art team are working hard on a stunning boat wrap design to finish this boat. So, for now, we wanted to share with you how the 3D model looks in-game and how one of our artists, Vincent, has made the F20 Predator. How we make the boats When making boats for Bassmaster® Fishing 2022, the team has a process to go through to make sure the boats look as good as possible in-game! We spoke to Vincent Turner one of our 3D Artists, who broke down the important steps when it comes to making boats for the game. 3D Model Vincent will first pull reference images of the boat he is going to make; with these references he starts to block out the basic shapes in 3D modelling software. Once the basic shapes are in place, we then work on scaling to make sure that we have the correct proportions between different aspects of the boat. Now that the boat’s scale is correct, Vincent can then focus on modelling the details, all these extra details are what bring the boat to life. Getting the model right is one of the longest tasks when making a boat. We want the boat to replicate the real life one as close as possible, so Vincent will spend more time focusing on this early part of the process. UVs (The letters "U" and "V" denote the axes of the 2D texture) Next up, the 3D model needs to be unwrapped to make UVs. Imagine you have made a cube out of paper and you need to take the cube apart into one 2D flat piece - this process is the same, but your cube is the boat and the final flat piece at the end is your UV. This is an important step because the UVs tell the engine how to map the 2D texture images onto the 3D model. Texturing After being unwrapped, the boat can now be textured. Textures like carpet, rubber, metal, and more are designed and painted onto the model to start making it look like a real boat. For Bassmaster® Fishing 2022, the artists have a new method for texturing the boats. Before, we would use one texture tile for the whole boat, but now, the artists are able to use multiple texture tiles on one boat. What this means is that boat textures will be at a higher resolution and look better than ever before. In-Engine Once the boat has been textured, it is then bought across into the game engine. In engine we can change the colour for lots of different parts on the boat, and this is done by splitting the boat out into separate parameters. Once this step is done, the boat is then handed over to the rest of the team to be rigged for animation. In-Game In Bassmaster® Fishing 2022, you’ll work up the ranks as you conquer tournaments. You’ll be able to equip yourself with better kit as you travel along your journey to the Bassmaster® Classic. Boats such as the F20 Predator will have you shooting around the water quicker and ultimately, will help you in your quest to lift that coveted Bassmaster® Classic trophy. The F20 Predator is just one of many great boats you’ll be able to use in Bassmaster® Fishing 2022, so make sure you don't miss a drop of info on the great equipment you'll be using later this year by following us on our social channels and joining our Bassmaster® Fishing 2022 Newsletter! * Follow us on our social channels [http://www.facebook.com/DovetailFishing] * Sign up to our Bassmaster® Fishing 2022 Newsletter [http://live.dovetailgames.com/auth/register?returnPath=/live/bassmaster-fishing/about-bassmaster-fishing-video-game-2022] * Join our community Discord [http://discord.gg/z9zHX47vBv]
